The idea for this book began as I reflected on the life of my grandmother, Dee, who had a profound influence on my life. I very much wanted to capture my thoughts so that I might let her know what she meant to me and how she had, indeed, influenced my life.
When I was a youngster, Dee gave me a small cross-stitched sampler that read, “Be careful what you set your heart on for you will surely get it.” I had no idea how imbedded that little saying was in my heart. As an adult I began to understand how important that cross-stitched advice had become.
As badly as I wanted to express my feelings to Grandmother Dee, when I tried to get my thoughts out a flood of emotions would come over me and I just could not get through it. Finally, my ever so strong wife, Kimberly, agreed to read my notes to Dee and told her that I was going to write a book that would enable us to share her life of Christian discipleship with others.
As I reflected on her great example of living the Christian life, thinking of all the ways in which I could see Christ living in her, I began to list the Christ-like characteristics that I saw being genuinely lived out in her life – a life that lasted 98 years. I reflected on what the world would be like if there were more Dees in this world. And I asked myself one simple question: what exactly is the motivation for my life?
For answers, I searched the Scriptures, knowing that absolute truths would be revealed; I read all of John Wesley’s sermons; and I closely observed Christian businessmen whom I had come to admire.
And the result? Chasing Solomon.
As you read through Chasing Solomon and use the workbook in your small-group experience, it is my hope that you will find the answers you are seeking to answer the questions most on your heart concerning His plan for your life.
May God grant us wisdom for all our lives.
