My month with Solomon
Is it just me or does it seem like wisdom is absent these days. I’m talking about in all areas of life. Just like Elvis, it appears that wisdom has left the building. Where has the wisdom in the government gone? Where is the wisdom in corporate America? Is there any wisdom on Wall Street? Has wisdom left the building in our churches?
Now let’s bring it closer to home. Where has the wisdom gone that is needed to be a good parent, or a good spouse, or a good friend, a good employer or employee? If one were to try to find the answer to these questions, where would he go? That’s the question I’ve been asking myself lately. And the result? I spent a month with Solomon.
The Bible says that “All the earth sought the audience of Solomon, to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.” So last month, I too joined that audience, to see once again for myself the wisdom that God had put in his heart, so that I could have it in my heart as well.
Each morning, I would spend some time with Solomon by reading the words of wisdom that God had given him which are found in the 31 chapters of Proverbs. That makes one Proverb for every day of the month. What if all the earth once again sought the wisdom that God had put in Solomon’s heart? Would things be different? It would be for sure if that wisdom was applied in our lives.
These last 31 days with Solomon have taught me so many lessons. As I opened my mind and heart to this wisdom, I see how valuable it is to all of life. One day I learned about all the junk that wisdom can keep prevent. One day we had a lesson on adultery. Another day we learned about money management. There were lessons about how to treat others, why we need to work hard, about parenting, running a business, pride, and on and on.
I wonder how many marriages could have be saved, how many bankruptcies could have be eliminated, how much true success could be accomplished, how many broken relationships could have been prevented if wisdom was present in our lives. I can only imagine what a difference we would see in our personal lives, our family’s life, our church’s life, in corporate America, and in our government, and ultimately in the world if once again, all the earth sought the wisdom of God. And it always starts with the one who looks back at us in the mirror every morning. Take a month and spend it with Solomon. Read God’s wisdom found in Proverbs and apply it to daily life.
My conclusion after spending a month with Solomon is that the wisdom of God has not left the building. We may have left the building but He never leaves. I think what is needed is for each of us, is to seek this wisdom “whose proceeds are better than profits of silver and her gain than fine gold. And all the things that you desire cannot compare with her.”
