Underground Angels
Have you ever suspected there to be a secret society out there in which the people right next door to you may be involved? You may even have been a victim of one of their acts. It is the secret society of the underground angels. No one will ever admit to being an underground angel. You will never see a membership list, and there will never be a membership meeting. However, membership is said to be open to all who wish to join. It costs nothing to join, but the rewards of membership? Priceless.
The life of an underground angel…those who do anonymous acts of kindness to others. They don’t want to be known. They don’t even want to be seen. They do these acts looking for absolutely nothing in return, but they have an inner joy in life that words simply cannot describe.
Their underground operations are broad and extensive. And while the evidence of their activities is everywhere, seldom are they caught in the act. And the members of this secret society would rather it stay that way. Their operations are carried out by members of all ages and at times when you would least expect it. Their way of life that they have chosen provides an unending fountain of blessings in their lives. In fact, mimicking their mission is surprisingly the best remedy for those who feel like they are down in the dumps. (Go ahead—test it out next time you are down in the dumps). The covert missions provide the biggest high a person can have. It brings them a joy that the human heart can hardly comprehend.
There are many people I know that I suspect of being members in this secret society. Why do I suspect them? Because occasionally they can be caught red handed carrying out those underground activities. I have caught a young kid raking an elderly neighbor’s yard after dark. I have caught one paying the gas for a single mom who didn’t have a clue how she was going to fill her tank with $3.50. I saw one trying to slip an envelope of cash through the front door of a friend who had fallen on tough times. I saw one delivering warm blankets and a meal to a homeless man living under a bridge in the dead of winter.
They really run the chance of being busted when the needs of their community are the highest. I suspect that many an underground angel was exposed during days following this recent storm that devastated parts of Northeast Jackson. Those are times when their operations are most likely to be detected. I really do believe that I was actually working alongside some of these underground angels. I didn’t ask and they didn’t tell.
I would suspect, however, that if these underground angels could be caught and interrogated, I bet we would discover that their motive was nothing less than an overflowing heart of love from God the Father and the sharing of the mercy and grace given through Jesus the Lord, and a compassion for others given as a gift from the Holy Spirit. Want to have the time of your life? Try to live the life of an underground angel for a day. Experiment with it. See how creative you can be. Keep your eyes open to other’s needs rather than your own. And when you discover a need…meet it.
On behalf of all of your other victims, thanks to all the underground angels out there, whoever you are.
Scot is the author of Chasing Solomon, an book dedicated to and inspired by the life of his grandmother Dee, who he suspected of being an underground angel.
