Identity Theft
Violated. That’s the word that comes to mind. Have you ever had your identity stolen from you? Nothing feels worse. It leaves you with a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. You feel lost and want your identity back. What a great feeling to finally get it back and have it secure. Do you know how badly the crook wants to steal your identity?
As children of God, we have our identity in Christ. Our identity has been secured and there is no reason to look for our identity in another. Satan wants to rob the children of God of their identity in Christ, and can do that in many ways. One of which is trying to get your identity from another person.
Ever notice how people will try to identify with stars or somebody famous or somebody they feel is important? Why is that? Bring up some famous person’s name to somebody who is not secure in their identity in Christ and watch them attempt to be associated with that person. They feel a need to be IMPORTANT too, so they name drop or attach themselves to the identity of another person. If they ever get to meet such a person they will say something like…”I am third cousins with your mother in law’s niece.” ….anything to identify ourselves with this famous or perceived important person.
We can try to get our identity from being associated with the right group. It might be the movers and shakers or a certain group at work. We can also try to get our identity by associating ourselves in certain activities. And we can even try to get our identity from our spouse. My wife, Kimberly, and I celebrate 20 years of marriage this month. One of the greatest things about her and our marriage is that we get our identity from Christ, not anything or anybody else. She has taught me so much by her example and our marriage has been blessed because Kimberly recognizes she is a child of God and nobody can ever steal that identity from her.
The good news is that there are ways to protect from identity theft. Most importantly, realize that you are a child of God! There is no more reason to be star struck or try to get your identity in another. God has created you as His special and unique person, full of unique creative talents and God-given gifts. And rest assured, He loves you far more than anybody else that you might want to tie your identity in. So the first line of defense is to read his letter, the Bible, and experience who He is and who you are as His child.
Don’t let your identity be stolen and if it has been, go to the one who can give it back to you and keep it secure for all of eternity. That one is Jesus Christ. God bless you as you are found by Him and rest in the security of knowing your identity is in Him.
